Avoid a Flip-Flop Fiasco: Essential Tips for Safe and Healthy Feet
Flip-flops might seem like the perfect footwear choice for warm weather, but wearing them every day can lead to foot pain and injuries due to their lack of arch support. Follow these simple dos and don’ts to keep your feet healthy and avoid a flip-flop fiasco!
Dos
- Choose High-Quality Leather: Opt for flip-flops made of soft leather. This minimizes the risk of blisters and irritation.
- Check Flexibility: Ensure the flip-flop bends at the ball of the foot. Avoid any that fold in half.
- Proper Fit: Make sure your foot doesn’t hang off the edge of the flip-flop.
- Use in Public Areas: Wear sturdy flip-flops around public pools, beaches, hotel rooms, and locker rooms to protect your feet from plantar warts and athlete’s foot.
Don’ts
- Avoid Old Flip-Flops: Regularly inspect your flip-flops for wear and tear. Discard any pairs showing severe wear.
- Watch for Toe Irritation: Be mindful of irritation between the toes, which can cause blisters and infections.
- Limit Walking Distances: Avoid wearing flip-flops for long walks as they provide minimal shock absorption and arch support.
- Skip Yard Work: Don’t wear flip-flops for yard work. Choose shoes that fully protect your feet when mowing the lawn or using a weed-eater.
- No Sports in Flip-Flops: Playing sports in flip-flops can lead to foot and ankle injuries, such as sprains and breaks.
Additional Tip
- Look for the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Seal: Choose flip-flops with the APMA’s Seal of Acceptance to ensure they promote proper foot function and health.
